Ahilya Fort - Maheshwar

Ahilya
Fort, perched high above the River Narmada, is an enchanting
place to stay. The atmosphere here is more of a cosy and quirky
home rather than a grand fort. The building has been perfectly
restored: pale old stone floors, ancient shuttered doors, carved
arches and unusual bathrooms. Richard Holkar, whose descendants
were kings of Indore, is the driving force behind Ahilya. The
hotel organises local activities at the fort, on the river and
in the surrounding area including visits to ancient forts and
temples and local handcraft centres where traditional saris
are produced. He is also a self confessed foodie and can arrange
for cookery demonstrations etc. Boat rides on the river to see
the life on the ghats are also arranged. This is the perfect
location to witness, spirituality on the river banks and rural
India at its best.
